7 Things To Keep in Mind Before Building Kitchen Countertops

One of the most important aspect of the kitchen is the countertop. It’s where we prep for a meal, place the utensils, cook and clean. It is the maximum utilized space in the kitchen. Choosing the right countertop is of critical importance as we will have to use it for a long time and the cabinets and drawers are directly dependent on it. Here are some important things the keep in mind for the kitchen countertops.

Material – Choosing the right material is the very first thing to consider as other things depend on it. There is a wide variety of kitchen countertop materials available thanks to advanced engineering and mining. Some of the options available are granite, laminates, ceramic tile, engineered stone, concrete. The material should be chosen depending on the use of the kitchen, space availability, and the climatic conditions of the area. The bottom line is that the material must be durable, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing.

Colour of Kitchen Countertops – We usually see people using black granite as their kitchen countertop. Those kitchens have now given way to modern kitchens where a variety of colours are used. One of the things to consider while choosing the colour of the countertop would be to see spilled items clearly. Hence, using a plain, non-patterned countertop would be better. So it doesn’t matter whether we choose a light colour or dark, as long as the utility is served.

The texture of the Kitchen Countertops– Choosing a texture isn’t that difficult as a smooth one is preferred, because it’s easy to slide things across it, not to mention it is much easier to clean. A grainy surface would lead to spilled food or drink getting caught in the holes and crevices.

Colour co-ordination – A modern kitchen isn’t just utilitarian, but also aesthetically pleasing. So, choose a countertop having a colour that contrasts well with the drawers and storage cupboards.

Slope of the kitchen countertop – This is a much-ignored factor while getting a countertop made and is noticed only once we start using the kitchen and leaks take place. The countertop must slope towards the sink, so that water drains in the direction of the sink and not towards the edge.

Raised edges – While modern countertops may be aesthetically pleasing and smooth, raised edges is something that is not always considered. The edges of the countertop must be raised so that while cleaning, water doesn’t spill out on the floor. Also, cups or utensils can be kept upside down on the edge to help them dry.

Affordability – This is ofcourse the most important factor to consider. If the budget is very tight, it will be better to go for a more affordable and conventional options. On the other hand, a higher budget can make way for a fancier countertop.
